Most "use AI for your expenses" advice ends with pasting a server URL into a developer settings screen. That step is gone. ExpenseBot was approved into the ChatGPT app directory in July 2026, so connecting is three clicks:

1. In ChatGPT, open Apps and search "ExpenseBot" — or open the ExpenseBot listing directly.
2. Click Try in chat.
3. Sign in with the Google account you use for ExpenseBot and click Allow on the consent screen.

No personal access token, no JSON config file, no URL pasting. Two things are worth knowing before you start: ChatGPT requires a paid plan (Plus or Pro) for apps and connectors — that's OpenAI's rule, not ours — and you need an ExpenseBot account, which is free to create with a 60-day trial and no card. What you can do from ChatGPT (real prompts)

The connector publishes 43 tools to the conversation, so this is closer to running your books from chat than to asking a chatbot for budgeting tips. A representative set:

Capture a receipt without leaving the chat

You: [drops a photo of a restaurant receipt] "Log this."
ExpenseBot: extracts vendor, date, subtotal, tax and total, and writes the row to your Google Sheet — typically in about 30 seconds.

Reports are generated as real files in your Drive and shared per recipient. You can also ask for a compliance pass ("find anything in March that needs a receipt") or a deductibility check before you claim something.

Your data stays yours

Connecting a finance tool to a chat assistant is a reasonable thing to be cautious about. Three specifics matter more than reassurance:

• You approve what it can touch. Tools are grouped into scope-gated categories that you accept explicitly on the OAuth consent screen. Only results from tools you actually invoke enter the conversation — ExpenseBot never pushes your data into a chat on its own.
• Modern auth, no shared secrets. The connector uses OAuth 2.1 with PKCE (S256) and Dynamic Client Registration. There is no token for you to copy, paste, or accidentally leave in a config file. ExpenseBot is CASA Tier 2 certified, and that certification covers the whole data path.
• Your data lives in your Drive. Expenses are written to a Google Sheet you own. Revoke access whenever you like — the sheet, and everything in it, stays with you.

One more thing, because it's a fair question about any app inside a chat product: the ExpenseBot ChatGPT app sells nothing and processes no payment. There is no upsell surface and no checkout in the conversation.
