What Apple receipts look like — and why they're awkward to expense

Apple receipts are harder to file than most, and it isn't the OCR that makes them hard. Three things get in the way:

• One email, several purchases. Buy three things in an afternoon and they often arrive combined in a single receipt under one charge — a $99 developer renewal, a $9.99 storage plan and a game your kid bought, all in one document.
• Renewals arrive quietly. Subscription receipts look identical month after month, so they're the easiest thing in an inbox to stop noticing.
• Hardware reads differently from software. A MacBook order confirmation is laid out nothing like an App Store receipt, so a filing habit built around one doesn't transfer to the other.

Here's how ExpenseBot actually handles the bundled case, precisely: a receipt that covers several items is written as one row at the amount you were charged, and the individual item names are captured in the sheet's Notes column — for example Description: Final Cut Pro; iCloud+ 2TB; Wordscapes. That's deliberate. One row per charge is what reconciles cleanly against the single APPLE.COM/BILL line on your card statement, and the item names are still there when you need to decide what was business.

Splitting a bundled Apple receipt

How much of an Apple purchase is actually deductible?

An Apple purchase is deductible to the extent you use it for business — the test is the business-use share, not the Apple logo. A Mac bought solely for client work sits at one end; a family iPad used occasionally for invoicing sits nearer the other, and only the business portion belongs in your books.
