How do I look up a Walmart receipt I lost?

Start in the Walmart app → Purchase history. Every in-store purchase made while signed in, paid with Walmart Pay, or paid with a card saved to the account appears there — itemized, with tax, payment method, store location, and a barcode the customer service desk can scan for a return. This is the fastest route and it solves most cases.

If the purchase is not listed, work down this order:

  1. Walmart.com order history — online orders are not in the in-store receipt lookup at all. Sign in, open the order, view or print it. Walmart also emailed an order confirmation at purchase, so searching email for the order number is often faster.
  2. The emailed receipt — in-store purchases are emailed too if a digital receipt was requested at checkout or Walmart Pay was used. Search email for "Walmart" plus the approximate date.
  3. The online Receipt Lookup tool — for an in-store card purchase that never reached Purchase history. It asks for the store location (ZIP, or city and state), the purchase date, the card type and last four digits, and the receipt total.
  4. The store's customer service desk — associates can search the transaction system in ways the public tool cannot. Best option for older or unusual purchases. Bring the card, the approximate date, and the store.
  5. The bank or card statement — not a receipt (it never says what was bought), but it supplies the exact date and total the lookup tool needs, and serves as supporting evidence.

The limitation that catches people

The Receipt Lookup tool works by matching a card transaction. A cash purchase has no card to match, so unless an email was supplied at checkout, that tool will not find it. Cash purchases go to the customer service desk, or they are gone.

How far back

Purchase history in the account and app covers roughly the last two years. The public Receipt Lookup tool covers a shorter window. Walmart does not publish one guaranteed retention figure covering every purchase type, and the numbers quoted across the web disagree — check the account's own Purchase history first, and ask the store for anything older.

Return standard vs tax standard — they are different

  • For a return, the store only needs to identify the transaction. The barcode in the app's Purchase history does that as well as the paper slip.
  • For taxes, the record must show the date, the merchant, the amount and what was bought, and stay legible for the whole retention period. Digital is explicitly acceptable — IRS Rev. Proc. 97-22 and the CRA's electronic record-keeping guidelines both accept legible digital copies. A statement line reading "WAL-MART #1234" does not qualify, because it never says what was purchased. Thermal paper fades within months, which is why a photo taken on the day beats the paper original. Estimates — confirm with your tax professional.

Walmart's standard return policy does allow some no-receipt returns with a valid government-issued photo ID, processed through a return-verification system; refunds in that case commonly come as a Walmart gift card rather than to the original payment method, and stores apply their own limits on value and frequency. Check Walmart's published return policy for current terms.

Not having to look it up next time

ExpenseBot reads receipts the user already has — it scans Gmail for emailed receipts (the Walmart digital receipt, the Walmart.com order confirmation, and the same from every other retailer) and writes each one into a Google Sheet in the user's own Drive; paper receipts get photographed into the same sheet, which is what covers the cash purchase the Receipt Lookup tool cannot find. It does not sign in to Walmart and cannot retrieve a receipt for a purchase that produced no document — for that, the routes above are still the answer.
