Ask ExpenseBot chat or your connected MCP assistant: Create a tag called Project - Website Redesign. You do not need to select an expense. Creating a tag does not change any expenses or create a report.
- ExpenseBot checks your current Tags sheet. An existing tag is reused with its saved spelling, rather than creating a duplicate.
- If similar names exist, choose the existing tag or explicitly ask for a separate new tag. ExpenseBot does not silently merge those names.
- Review the proposed name and confirm creation. In ExpenseBot chat, use the Create tag confirmation card. In an MCP assistant, approve the preview when asked. A preview alone has not created the tag.
- After creation is verified, the tag is available for receipts, expense review, and reports. Applying it to existing expenses is a separate action.
Want to check first? Ask Show my tags. Short lists can appear in the conversation. For a long list, open the supplied Manage Tags link and use Search tags to search names and descriptions.
An inactive tag is not automatically restored. Open Manage Tags, choose Inactive, and restore it there if needed. If ExpenseBot cannot check the registry or verify a save, it has not confirmed creation; follow the returned status guidance rather than repeatedly requesting a new tag.
For integrators: use create_tag with name. The first call returns the
preview and operationId. After the user approves, send the same name and
operation ID with confirm: true. Set allowSimilar: true only after the user
chooses a distinct tag despite the suggestions. For an uncertain outcome, use
the same name and operation ID with status: true; do not start another create
operation. The tool requires expenses.write access and does not enable
accountant impersonation or change expenses. Check your client's tools/list
for availability; older installed local packages may not expose this tool yet.
For tag formats, manual setup and reports, see Manage tags.
