Not always. A subscription includes Year End for every year. You can also unlock a past year's Year-End workbook with a one-time Gmail-scan unlock, with no subscription.
What unlocks Year End
- Subscription ($10/month or $100/year per seat): Year End for every year, plus ongoing scanning and bank connection.
- $79 one-time unlock: Year End for the one past year you unlock. It is the same unlock that lets you scan that year's Gmail.
- $199 Any Past Year access: Year End for every completed year available when you buy it, across all connected Gmail accounts.
The year in progress is subscription-only. A one-time unlock covers a period only after it has ended, and only if it covers all of it.
If your tax year doesn't follow the calendar
In the UK (6 April to 5 April), Australia (1 July to 30 June), New Zealand and India (1 April to 31 March), South Africa (1 March to the end of February) and Hong Kong personal tax (1 April to 31 March), you unlock a tax year instead of a calendar year. The year cards on the Gmail scan page name the tax year and show its dates, and Year End opens on the same tax year. Everywhere else, for example the US and Canada, it is the calendar year.
If you see calendar-year cards in a country that uses a tax year, your account is probably a business or team account, or you set your own reporting year. Unlock the calendar years you need.
Where to unlock it
Open My Reports → Year-End and choose the period. When that period isn't unlocked, Year End shows the options where you generate the report: unlock that year, get every past year, or Subscribe. Paying for a one-time unlock also starts that year's Gmail scan, which covers every connected Gmail account.
A full refund of a one-time unlock removes the Year-End access that came with it. See the refund policy.
